About Us

Nang Loeng's Heritage

Nang Loeng's history dates back to the early nineteenth century when it was known as Ban Sanam Kwai or Buffalo Field Village.

The community's cultural diversity is striking, stemming from a mix of Thai, Mon, Lao, and Khmer influences. This blend has produced a vibrant cultural heritage that is truly unique. Chinese merchants further contributed to the cultural tapestry by setting up small shops and markets in the late 1800s.

Nestled amidst royal palaces, Nang Loeng's ancestors were court servants, many of whom were renowned court performers known for their Chatri play.
The legacies of these performances and cultural practices have been passed down through generations, establishing Nang Loeng as a hub for various cultural sites. Notable among them are local workshops crafting Khon costumes, the Art House, Dance House, the historic Sala Chalerm Thani theatre (one of the oldest cinemas in Asia), and the Market hall.
These cultural sites have become anchors for the community's identity, embodying the traditions, craftsmanship, and artistic expressions that define

Nang Loeng. Whether it's the art of making Khon costumes, traditional dances, or the cinematic history preserved in Sala Chalerm Thani, Nang Loeng's heritage is a living testament to its resilience and commitment to preserving its cultural roots.

E-Lerng Artists Collective

The E-Lerng Artists Collective is a community-based group of artists and activists rooted in the Nang Loeng community of Bangkok, Thailand. Established in 2008, this collective arose as a response to social and cultural challenges within their community. Their mission is to use art as a tool for community development, fostering social cohesion, preserving cultural heritage, and enhancing the quality of life among residents.

E-Lerng engages in a variety of artistic and socially-engaged practices, including public art projects, workshops, and events that emphasize participation and collaboration. Their activities address local issues such as the preservation of traditional performance arts, sustainability, and public health, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic when they provided support through art-based initiatives.

This collective exemplifies community art in Thailand by prioritizing inclusivity, cultural expression, and the empowerment of the local community. E-Lerng's work underscores the importance of art as a means for social dialogue and collective problem-solving, blending traditional and contemporary practices to create a sense of shared identity and purpose within Nang Loeng.
